Roof Decorating

The holiday season is a joyous time of year, and one of the best ways to celebrate is by setting up holiday decorations in and around your home. While some people feel it is enough to decorate their front yards, others feel a need to decorate their roofs. However, when planning to install your holiday decorations, follow these basic tips of advice to ensure the safety of your home and yourself.

Wrap Wires

Before bringing wires and lights onto your roof, make sure that all are untangled to avoid any safety issues. You will also want to look for any frayed or damaged cords to reduce the risk of an electrical fire. Wrapping or replacing any damaged cords can help prevent this from happening.

Avoid Shingles

One of the biggest mistakes you can do while setting up your holiday decorations is nailing or hanging lights directly from your shingles. This will create holes in your roofing system causing moisture and water to penetrate your home, resulting in serious roofing damage. To avoid this, purchase light clips specifically made for attaching lights to your roof. There are several kinds made for shingles and gutters.

Limit Weight

Heavier decorations should be reserved for your front lawn. Placing heavy objects such as figurines, statues, and other large cutouts on the roof can damage shingles, resulting in further damage. Additionally, lifting and carrying heavy decorations onto your roof is a safety risk. It is best to keep decorations off of your roof, but if you still would like to display them, place them on your front lawn.

Ask for Help

To ensure your safety and the safety of your roof, consider having someone help you. Have them provide support to the ladder as you climb, hand decorations to you when you are already on the top, and most of all, help you should there be an emergency. Having someone help you will also make your job easier and have fewer chances of getting your property damaged.

If you accidentally damaged your roof while installing your holiday lights display, contact a professional roofing contractor for an inspection. They can help you determine the best course of action to repair your roof. Contact Bohan Contracting by calling 410-774-5122 or email us to schedule a free inspection and estimate today!
